Does anyone have a current report from Clark? I found this page about an hour ago and I'm still a little shell shocked.

I met Clark in 1996 in Joshua Tree of course. He was climbing with some friends and I was alone a few months into a year long climbing road trip i was taking before i did what ever i was gonna do after high school. We all got kicked out of the park (monument at the time) one morning because Clinton closed down the government. We all ended up down south outside of Chiraco Summit trying to find some rare off the beaten path routes and before I could even start to think about where I might go next Clark offered to put me up at his house in Idyllwild until the park reopened. So for a week I shared Clark's living room with Dave Mayville. It was Awesome! We went climbing everyday at Suicide or Tac. Then when the park reopened we all went back together.

This was almost 20 years ago and I have never since witnessed such an act of kindness. From some of the testimony Ive read this was way he was with everyone and i don't doubt it for a second. Clark is the most genuine person you could ever meet. He just makes everything better. It breaks my heart to read about the battle he's faced since 08'.

Its been many years since I've been in contact with him but in the last week or so he has been in my thoughts a lot. Since i'm not on facebook or anything I thought i could just google and find something out about the "Little Brown Man". I'm mostly sad for what I found but I'm so happy to hear that the local community of J-tree is coming together to help protect its Godfather

Thanks for the interest in Climb Smart David... I thought we had replied to this, but putting up on the public 'board' makes a lot of sense.

1) Yes the brands, guides and reps that support Climb Smart 2012 will bring extra gear. We encourage everyone to bring their own harness/shoes/device, however, if they have.

2) There is 'open climbing' and 'basic skills' mini-clinics... there isn't much climbing in the basic skills clinic, which covers the foundational base knowledge like knots, belaying technique, movement, etc... open clmbing is available for just tying in and TR'ing.

3) Dogs are allowed but not encouraged. They are not allowed off the main roads in Joshua Tree National Park, but they are allowed at the Joshua Tree Lake Campground, where the main events are.

Thanks again David.

I have a question for the Climb Smart event. 1) I would like to go with beginner friends of mine. They were wondering if there was gear, like shoes and harness for them. 2) Will the "Basic Skills" clinic allow them to get on rock to do some top rope climbing. Finaly, 3) Do you allow dogs?

Thanks,
David

I never knew that there had been such extensive preservation efforts. Great! I was up there in late winter of 2012 and there was no graffiti showing. I wish I could of seen it before the roof collapsed. Thanks for your efforts.

Hey Seth! Sorry for the delayed reply, I was at OR for a week and my brain just got back from Utah. This year's Climb Smart will be really special with Lynn Hill, Peter Croft and Kurt Smith and Brittany Griffith anchoring the athlete lineup and, for the first time ever, the JTNP as sponsor! It's their 75th anniversary and they want to honor the climbing community by contributing to the festivities with artists, music, etc...
Also, due to the increased support we are getting on this year's event, we are likely able to pay guides who donate their time at least a stipend of $100/day or so... still working out the mechanics on that, but at least we won't be asking you to completely donate your time. And the sponsors usually put together a great swag package for contributing guides. So thanks for the interest Seth, and I will be in touch as we dial in the deets. Cheers! Kenji

Hmmmmm.

Seems to me that "not so fast" isn't the correct thought. Since:

"developer’s petition to the U.S. Supreme Court. This substantially weakens the developer’s case and may persuade the Supreme Court to reject the petition..."

It appears Kenji, in your March 28 2011 statement to wit:

"...they will not intervene in the dispute between Kaiser and BLM on the deal to trade federal lands to allow Eagle Mtn landfill to go forward."

From what I read here, it appears the USSup Court refused to hear the petitioner's argument, making his appeal mute.

Sounds like a "win-win" for JTNP
