Joshua Tree National Park and Community Resources

Ancestral Land Stewards

…Respect & Protect the Tribes of Joshua Tree and surrounding area

Joshua Tree and the surrounding high desert region have a rich and ongoing history of indigenous presence and harmonious co-existence with the lands in and around Joshua Tree. The native people of the high desert are the original stewards of this amazing landscape, and we at FOJT feel it’s critically important to protect and respect native culture and the resources that are so valuable to the thousands of living members of the Chemehuevi, Serrano, Mojave and Cahuilla tribes

Why are we listing this as a community resource? Well first of all, we wouldn’t have this land to visit and recreate in if it weren’t for those who managed the lands for thousands of years before America came to be. Secondly, it’s important to understand what constitutes respect and protect in an area rich with unique natural and cultural resources. If you want to learn more about how indigenous cultures protect biodiversity, for example, read this Scientific American article on the topic.

If you encounter cultural resources, please help respect and protect

  1. Leave artifacts in place.
  2. Don’t add rock art.
  3. Keep pets leashed (and in the Park, in campgrounds).
  4. Camp and eat away from archeological sites.
  5. Don’t build cairns that lead to/impact artifacts.
  6. Be mindful – take a moment to reflect on how the artifact got there. It is on its own journey.

Joshua Tree is a rural, unincorporated community of about 8,000 year-round residents centered near the west entrance to Joshua Tree National Park. Following is an inventory of local businesses and services to make your visit here easier and more enjoyable (including nearby Yucca Valley resources). Businesses and service providers marked with (*) support Friends of Joshua Tree with material support, and we recommend them wholeheartedly:
